Carrot Addiction Can Be Fatal

Mention carrot addiction and you will probably get a hoot of laughter. After all, carrots are a vegetable and they are good for you, aren't they? Yes, and no is the answer to this question.

Carrot addiction is a real complaint. Addicts think about eating them, often know they shouldn't be eating as many and really can't stop. Recent research revealed that one woman who managed to stop smoking without too much trouble could kick the carrot habit. She has been eating a pound of carrots a day for the last eleven years.

So, why is this a problem? You might ask.

The trouble is that the body cannot cope with large amounts of beta carotene on a continuous basis and it is this chemical that gives carrots their orange colour. Carrots contain large quantities of vitamin A which can poison the system and adversely affect the liver which constantly tries to regulate it.

Sufferers of carrot addiction sometimes have an orangey colour to their skin and even the whites of the eyes may turn orange. The palms of the hands and the soles of feet can become carrot coloured in serious cases.

The big problem is that other people find this amusing and are not supportive of carrot addicts. Even some doctors fail to see it as a problem. There was a lot of research done a few years on the effects of drinking carrot juice. It was then recommended that this should not be done excessively because of potential liver problems. If this is the case, then surely, eating large quantities of raw carrots must be just as bad.

Large doses of vitamin A can damage bones and encourage the onset of osteoporosis.

Arctic hunters who eat large amounts of polar bear liver which is extremely high in vitamin A, have actually died of vitamin A poisoning, and so have children who accidentally ate vitamin A tablets. Excessive doses are known to cause birth defects too.

The beta carotene in carrots in converted into vitamin A in the body, so go easy on the carrots. If you think you have a carrot addiction do something about it. It's no joking matter.

We are learning all the time... I used to take freshly squeezed carrot juice every morning to help keep my suntan. I must have consumed at least 3 kilos a week! every week for about a year !!!

Thankfully, I went off it (just as I was starting to look like Elmo) and now I just have the odd carrot :)

Very informative hub.

Great hub very informative. I had heard of this but this is the first time I have seen such a comprehensive expose of the humble carrot. I can of course think of less addictive carrot love!

sixtyorso and Princessa, thanks for the comments. I have to admit that I am not a carrot fan which probably a good thing. If I turn orange I would clash with my hair!

I have turned orange lately, like an oompa loompah, I swear! I have been sitting here for a few hrs now, all the while I want to get up & eat the cold crunchy orange goodies in the fridge.

I have been eating them for 5 yrs off & on, but nothing like the last 2 months. For the last year I have been eating the baby carrots, which are crap. Then I started on the real one with the greenery still attached. And oh boy! What a joy! The surgary cold crunchiness of them is fabulous, but I\'ve turned orange, palms & limbs.

I dont even eat that many, just like 4-6 carrots a day, maybe I over did it for 2 wks lately, ate more like 8-10 a day, that pushed me over the orange edge. It all started when i started eating them in the car to & from work, then it became anytime I drove.

I gotta get a carrot now. My hands are pinking up, not so orange these days, I have mixed it up with celery. So one little carrot now isnt gonna hurt me so bad, right?

Damn it! I am addicted! LOL, bummer, and I like them so much. Will I turn green from the celery? Is anyone addicted to that?

I have had to admit I am a carrot addict. Eaten them for the last six years , consumption varies from two a day to eight to ten. I know they are harming me as I have to go into hospital and have an Endoscopy, I have bleed somewhere.

This is my third day off the dreaded carrots and it is going ok; eating celery and peppers but not to extreme. I don't want to substitute one addistion for another. Oh and I am orange!

No carrot addictions are not fatal, or even dangerous. Carrots contain carotene, not vitamin A.

Yes, vitamin A can cause hypervitaminosis. But the body will not make dangerous levels of A even with high levels of carotene, you'll just turn yellow. The British Medical Journal had an article about this some time ago entitled, "Yellow, but healthy".

If it's possible to drink too much carrot juice, I haven't heard of it. And of course, there should be moderation in all things. But in general, people who turn yellow from eating too many carrots seem to be in good health and the yellow goes away within a few days after carotene is removed from the diet.

This author is a knucklehead. Why are you passing bad information to the public? Telling people that the one thing that could save their health is actually hurting them. You should be ashamed.
